Captain's Log

by Jan Rieger

J-O-B Alert!  “The Del Mar Times and the Solana Beach Sun are looking for an energetic, web-oriented individual for an assistant editor/reporter position with our coastal newspapers,” reports Kathy Day, Editor of the La Jolla Light.  She says “the person should have strong community reporting skills, the ability to make city council meeting coverage interesting, and also to write about the personalities that make up our communities. The person we hire will also carry the flag for our papers at community events so it helps to be a ‘social animal.’” Send resume, writing clips, salary history and requirements to editor@lajollalight.com. Compensation includes salary and benefits, including 401K.

Also, Gloria Penner reports that there’s a new job posted at KPBS for a Fronteras Reporter and it closes on July 22nd.   Here's the web page.

Caron Golden, freelancer, social media voice, and blogger at SanDiegoFoodstuff.com, will soon be blogging weekly for San Diego Magazine, and this fall, the magazine will include her monthly column “Local Bounty.” Caron is lining up the fantastic restaurants for our October 19 “Excellence in Journalism Awards,” with quite a lineup already confirmed!

Tanya Mannes has been promoted to Senior Reporter at the San Diego Union Tribune, covering Small Business/Entrepreneurship (as of July 12). Her previous beat was the North Coast.

Do you hear those wedding bells? They’re ringing for Doug Sherwin of the San Diego Daily Transcript, who will marry Julie Park on July 17 in Massachusetts. Congrats, Doug!

Francine Phillips is the new Director of Communications for the Alzheimers Association. She will be heading up public policy and advocacy in addition to……communicating.

Congrats to Point Loma writer Justin Halpern, a senior writer for Maxim magazine, for his enormous success with “S@#% My Dad Says.” As you probably know by now, within a few short months his funny “tweets” led to a book and a TV show, with William Shatner playing his father.

Roger Conlee’s third historical novel, “The Hindenburg Letter,” won the action/thriller category at the San Diego Book & Writing Awards, the fourth largest competition of its kind in the country. Published by Pale Horse Books of Virginia, “The Hindenburg Letter” features a reporter for William Randolph Hearst who risks all sneaking into Nazi Germany in 1942.

Last week, I accidentally gave Gloria Penner a promotion. Her correct title at KPBS is Senior Political Correspondent and Host, Editors Roundtable and San Diego Week.

A sporty congrats to Wynston Sawyer, who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles before  graduation day at Scripps Ranch High.  His mom, Jodi Sawyer, was a Product Manager for Jack in the Box, pregnant with Wynston, when I worked down the hall from her as spokesperson for “Foodmaker.”

Did you know that San Diego is America’s #1 solar city? Our own solar marketing star, Mary Beth McCabe, spoke at the National Solar Conference about “Marketing Your Solar Business.” Check her out at sunmarketingsolar.com. A former broadcaster, McCabe holds a Ph.D., teaches at several universities, is a doting mother of four, blogs as Dr. Mary Travelbest, and is also an expert in Hispanic Marketing.

On July 17, the San Diego Space Society will air “Moon Beat” (free!) at 7 p.m. at the Space Travelers Emporium, 1947 30th St.  The 88-minute documentary turns the cameras on the journalists who covered the first manned landings on the moon.

The San Diego Union Tribune is physically shrinking in size – to 44” wide pages soon.

Enlace is introducing Enlace Extra, a weekly publication listing San Diego entertainment and events, to be distributed to 100,000 upscale households in Tijuana.

National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Adventurer of the Year” Albert Lin, a UC San Diego researcher and alumnus, is mounting his second expedition to Mongolia in search of the tomb of Genghis Khan. Yes, your life is boring. His isn’t.

Congratulations to David Doyle, a partner with Morrison & Foerster, for being the only San Diegan featured in National Law Journal’s annual “WINNINGS” feature. Eleven litigators were profiled because of their talent in the courtroom.

Former KUSI and KFMB anchorman Stan Miller is “home.” He told me a couple of years ago how much his family wanted to return to Oklahoma. He’s now the news anchor at the CBS news affiliate in Oklahoma City.

Going anywhere interesting this summer?

CALL FOR ENTRIES DEADLINE AUGUST 2

And so the process begins for the 37th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards.  The instructions, categories and the entry form are now available and the deadline for entries is August 2, 2010.  Please click here for the forms and more information.

The awards are for work published, aired, broadcast or webcast during the period of July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010.

There are a few changes this year.  The print “Reviews” category was broken down into four separate areas because the number of entries had gotten too large to judge.  It’s possible that the same will also happen to “Topic Based Blogs” this year; it will depend on the number of entries.

The biggest change is one we hope will appeal to everyone. For the first time, the Wildcard Category is a competition of original work not previously published!

The topic was inspired this year’s theme – THE FOURTH ESTATE: Reframing a New Reality.  Your mission is to predict the future of journalism in San Diego.   Where will we all be in 5 years?  How will news gathering be different?  How will people get their news?  Write an essay, produce a TV or Radio news feature, post a blog, create a website…take any approach you wish.

The prize, in addition to a handsome plaque,

is $500 so do some thinking and win big!
