THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM MAY APPEAR DIM, BUT THERE ARE SOME STARS ON THE HORIZON.

The honorees for the 22nd Annual San Diego Press Club Scholarship awards more than maintained the previously established standards.

At the beginning of the May 10th  meeting of the San Diego Press Club Board of Directors, Melody Karpinski was presented with the $2,500 Joseph Lipper Scholarship Foundation Award for her entry in the competition. Presenting the Joseph Lipper Scholarship Award was Donna Lipper Lucas, one of Joe’s daughters.  Her mother, Donna I. Lipper also attended, accompanied by Tom Sprague, a longtime family friend and colleague of the late Joseph Lipper. The Point Loma Nazarene University Junior wrote an insightful story about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that addressed an attempt to build bridges of understanding between the warring sides.

Another Point Loma Nazarene University junior, Emily Holding, was presented with a $1,000 Meritorious Award certificate for her entry that dealt with credibility in some popular sources of published information. The judges found her story to be of compelling interest and written well enough to be noted with an award.

Jarred Randall Powell, seen here with his wife Lisa and Reid Carroll, won the $1,500 Community College Scholarship award for his story about a courageous young lady who overcame physical adversity to compete in sports activities. Jarred’s passion for sports began at an early age and keeping scores of ongoing games instilled the journalism habits that would ultimately determine his choice of a career. After serving 12 years of active duty as a U.S. Marine, Jarred returned to school and entered a Journalism degree program at Palomar College. The judges who reviewed the Scholarship entries agreed that Jarred Randall Powell made the right choice.
