What Becomes a Legend Most? Feedback Needed for Future Legends Events By Frank Saldana Organizers of the San Diego Press Club's old timers Legends luncheon are looking for feedback from attendees to last November's luncheon at the Mission Valley Resort and from those who also didn't attend and why. In past years the annual event has been held at a variety of settings, from Shelter Island to Viejas Casino and stops in between. Programs have varied from nothing more than a social gathering to more elaborate events with prominent speakers and the last with a video (DVD) presentation. Also being considered is the timing of the event. Last year it was shortly after the annual San Diego Press Club Journalism Awards in October. The thought: too much action close together. Perhaps booking the luncheon in April or May would provide a good separation and the days are longer than in November, which could be more desirable. Many of the older members of the club and guests have voiced concerns about driving in heavy traffic and after dark. This, in part, is why the event traditionally has been held at midday on Saturdays when traffic is usually lighter and there is more daylight. Recognizing that finances could play a role in attending the luncheon, the program committee has made the cost of the event as economical as possible in spite of rising costs. It has been successful in keeping it under $25 a person for years for a sit-down luncheon. Now, with the "brain drain" buyout of some 30 staffers at the San Diego Union-Tribune, it is expected that they may like to also join the Legends. Your input on future Legend Luncheons (or ?) is valued and welcomed. The club may be reached by email: sdpressclub@cox.net; by calling (619) 231-4340 and leaving a message or by sending a note to San Diego Press Club, 2634 46th St., San Diego, CA., 92105.
