Record Number of Students Vying for Scholarships

by Sally Hixson

Dozens of students have applied for this year's San Diego Press Club Foundation scholarships, well ahead of previous years. A total of 25 students are vying for either the $2,500 scholarship for four-year colleges or $1,500 for community colleges. Leading the pack is San Diego State University with 12 of the 25 applicants. Next were Point Loma Nazarene and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with five. Palomar College and City College each had one. And, we had one applicant from Cal State Fullerton. Most are in the print category, but we do have two broadcast (television) entries as well.

Judging for the competition will be May 16 at the San Diego Union-Tribune and the committee would appreciate any assistance the professional community could provide. The winners will be given their scholarships at the Press Club's Board meeting on June 11.

The Foundation also is looking for ways to increase the fund so more journalism scholarships can be awarded in the future. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Co-Chairs Reid Carroll and/or Sally Hixson via the Press Club at sdpressclub@cox.net
