Press Club Seeks Nominations for Special Awards

By Gayle Falkenthal

Four more people will join an exclusive group of award-winning journalists and public relations professionals when they are selected as this year's San Diego Press Club Special Award winners.

But to be considered, they've got to be nominated. We're counting on you to give someone that chance to receive well-deserved recognition, a free ticket to the Journalism Awards dinner, a swell plaque, and a prize check. The winner might even buy you a drink.

Any member can nominate any individual who meets the awards category criteria. There isn't a specific form. Please submit an essay with background information to support your nomination to Gayle Falkenthal at glf@san.rr.com, or fax it to 858-635-8931 by August 18, 2006.

Special awards include:

Andy Mace Award for Outstanding Contribution in Public Relations: Awarded to a PR practitioner who, over the course of their career, exemplifies fairness and integrity, and effectively disseminates the truth to concerned publics.

Harold Keen Award for Outstanding Contribution in Journalism: Given to the journalist who has throughout their career gone above and beyond standard practices for the sake of fairness and truth telling.

Drew Silvern Award for Special Achievement in Reporting: This journalist or team will be recognized for courageously reporting in a manner that their personal or professional lives were affected.

Jim Reiman Enlightened Management Award for Outstanding Media Management: This award - the antithesis of the Dilbert award - goes to the boss who łgets it˛ when it comes to managing information teams.

Last year's winners were Tom Blair, San Diego Magazine (Keen); Lynn Stedd, San Diego Blood Bank (Mace); and Chris Jennewein, SignOnSanDiego.com (Reiman). The Press Club did not name a Silvern Award winner.
